Interview
First of all...why did you choose Protassov as art name? Does it have some special meaning?
Well what do you think?
If you try to find out, you will find many possible meanings and it would be boring if I uncover the myths. Its fun to send the audience on the wrong track, giving them with as much space as possible to interpret my artistic output.
Protassov is my personal hideaway. It’s a nickname, a Russian football player, a mathematician and physicist. Most important: Protassov sounds good to me.
You started as a rock musician...how did you get close to the dance scene?
The drugs where better of course! No I’m joking. I never felt close to the dance scene at all. I always loved to dance, no matter whether its rock, hip hop, reggae, folk, jazz or house I’m dancing to. When House and Techno swapped to Germany in the mid eighties and early nineties I was pretty much into guitar music with bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth ruling my world.
But suddenly I heard Techno Artists like Jeff Mills or Dave Clark who brought such a raw power and frenetic energy to the clubs. At the same time I got more into Hip Hop because I started focussing my interests in making beats and learning sample techniques. So it was kind of a natural progression.
What can people still find of your rock influences in your actual production?
I guess it’s the way I try to tell a story with every song. This refers a lot to seventies stuff I love so much.

When with TEVO you played a lot of live shows in concerts and festivals...do you have the willing to come back playing on stage?
I’d love to!! I’m working on playing live right now, Playing live to an audience is definitive the best thing I can imagine.
In your record you can find lot of different moods coming from very different musical environments. If you should define your production, how could you call it?
I’m sorry but I really don’t want to define it. I’d like to leave that to the listener. I agree totally with you: it’s a mixture of different moods and environments. If the listener can pick out something she or he can feel too, I’m more than happy.
